Back to DD duty from a recent flesh wound, click !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Quality is luck of the draw. There are always contradictions to any story. Sheeet breaks on every car. In my case, it’s the basic sheeet that has always been such a headache. I’ve owned 7 German cars and work with European cars !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . THIS will be my last car from Europe.
File photos
ooooohhhh!
ahhhh.... sooo fanacyyyy and German engineeryyy like they say on Top Gear!
LOL and all for what? Only about pinches 150hp to all of the “QUATTRO” wheels. LOL nevermore!!!
Things I done did :
Remove entire front end
Head Gaskets (bolts, spark plug seals, etc.)
Timing chain tensioner gaskets (again)
Timing belt, idler pully, tensioner
Cam and crank seals
Water pump
Valve cover gaskets
Coil cables
Secondary Air pump and hoses
Oil cooler hoses
Radiator
Upper radiator hose
RF CV axle boots
Put front end back together
Let me tell you all again that NO car is “complicated” to work on. It’s all just nuts, bolts, parts, and fluids. Working on cars is a lot easier than most people think. Even brand new cars like some of us here work on for a living and for some time. People seem to glorify European cars as these works of art by mechanical wizards. LOL NOPE!!! Oh and that thing about “they over engineered *insert part*” lol that is a bunch of bologna also. There are fully loaded executive cars and there are ecoboxes. I personally do not believe one is not mechanically superior to the other.
There is equal, if not more plastic in the German cars i’ve owned than any ecocar usually clowned on round these parts lol. But who cares? Who is really driving around smug as SHIT! about the interior materials and the amount of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Relax people, you’re super cool, happy?
In closing, I would just like to say that i’m glad my clumsy wagon is back and running slow as ever and smooth as huevos. I’ve going to miss that 2015 Ford Escape rental. That ecoboost is incredible, fuel efficient ($20 every week and a half of heavy DD’ing), quicker than my 95 M3 for sure, smooth, comfy, lots of tech, and fun to drive around. Basically everything my Audi A6 Avant QUATTRO isn’t lol.
I am not comparing new cars to old cars. Not bashing European cars. Not hating on anything. Ya’ll know me. I like all cars, defend all cars, and car culture. Without any true specific reasons, my European car purchasing from now on is no more. I will DD the Krieg Wagen for a good long while. Especially in the mud!!! As for the future....i’m on team Jayhawk Jake. I want my C6! Light body, solid powertrain, America.
I’ll be turning 30 next year. It should be possible by then *finger’s crossed* But not if I have to keep dumping money on this wagon*
*doing all the work and buying parts at very good prices. Gotta pay to play I suppose.

Special tools for timing jobs - what is this sorcery.

FUCKING THIS. Injection molded plastic is a consequence of mass production, and not even six figures worth of spending on a car will save you from it. I loved Top Gear to death, but spreading the ‘car should not have plastic in them’ meme was one of the few things they did that I hated.

meh 2x4 with some holes in it works pretty good too. Actually an Audi 30V might be the only car I would 100% want to have some cam stability on before I did a t-belt.

VW Rabbit diesels, you can just stick a flat bar in a slot at the back of the cam. What got me was doing a chain job on that OM603 I’ve got - the vacuum and injector pumps kept wanting to jump off lobe and move the chain with. Huge hassle.

I can’t say I have ever used a tool on a 1.5 or 1.6 IDI VW, or a D20/24 either but I probably should have. Oh yeah 603 is stupid though!

a shop we deal with let me borrow it :]

there is ways around using special tools. But a shop i deal with at work let me borrow it

ditto. I’m not out to stomp on the younger enthusiasts who usually preach this, but there is so much contradiction in the car world that I don’t ever bother arguing

I need more stars. People don’t get this. I gave up trying to explain it on the front page because everyone just shits on me with blind defense of whatever their chosen brand is.

I respect your decision, but never say never, my friend...

“LOL and all for what? Only about pinches 150hp to all of the “QUATTRO” wheels. LOL nevermore!!!”
If that’s the 30V 90° 2.8L V6, it should be good for 190HP. If it’s the 2.4L version, then it’s still good for 170HP.

I doubt even when it was new it was putting 190 to the actual wheels. I predict if chassis dyno’d today, that heavy girl will put down at least 150-155 to the floor. It doesn’t matter how many valves that 90° 2.8L V6 has. Slow and not too reliable is what it is. But you know what, it is plenty fine :] Especially when hooning around in the mud or sand at the beach

Wait wait wait wait wait....
It is not possible to have a late 90s/early 2000s Audi cluster that doesn’t have missing pixels/lines/the whole thing has gone beserk.
Clearly Photoshopped.

the top square where the radio info is does loose pixles on hot days or if was parked in the direct sun. At night though, it works fine.

‘steering feel’
call me jaded...but no car will ever hold a candle in terms of ‘steering feel’ to one of these:
there has to be something said for direct communication when you are holding onto the suspension of the wheel

yea. I find it funny when all of my car buddies are like: OH IT HAS SO MUCH FEEL ITS AMAZING.
Me: meh.
I drove a miata. while it did have more feel then my moms is250, it wasnt a revelation for me.
still, it was nice not having to spend 10 minutes putting on gear

My buddy Erin had an early 90’s Quatro and an Audi 90. He worked at an Audi dismantle and recycle facility in Sacramento so he knew what he was getting into. These cars were bought used in decent shape and were not out of the junk lot.
True stories: 1. Quatro had 3 system failures on a 100 mile trip. Radio, AC, electric windows. 2. Audi 90: right front marker/blinker light fell off while driving down the road, a straight smooth road. I watched it bounce along the road and pointed it out to him as we cruised along, he did not lift. He sold all Audi’s and bought a Toyota Tacoma which I think he still driving to this day over 10 years later.

I dunno man. Engine timing scares the fuck outta me lol. If you get it wrong....KABOOM! I ain’t hating but you gotta realize you have a lot more mechanical knowledge than most of us. I have done a little wrenching, but for me I ain’t ashamed to admit, I wouldn’t even know where to begin to do all that to my car and it would be intimidating to try.
